I have always loved the children’s section of a library. Now that I have a child of my own, we get to visit there often. One of the first books we borrowed together was Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman. It is an adorable board book about a group of woodland creatures who have a party in the bear’s den while he snores on.
Of the handful of books I’ve borrowed so far for reading to my son, this has been my favorite. Many of the others tended toward shallow stories or overt messages. Bear Snores On is both simple and nuanced. From a bit of suspense – what if the bear wakes up? – to the joy of friendship.
I also loved the creative choices for which animals joined the party. Even a wren shows up! The writing is fluid, rhythmic, and fun. The illustrations add to the story, as does the type face. And best of all? They drink tea!
My son sat on my lap as I wrote this review and he wanted me to say how much he also enjoyed Bear Snores On. It’s definately a favorite in our family that we’ll have to check out again.
Do you have a favorite children’s books you love checking out from the library?
